Tonight, Monday 31 August 2026, Rio de Janeiro's nightlife reaches its best as the city celebrates its great samba night. Two institutions lead the festivities: Moacyr Luz's Samba do Trabalhador and the iconic free roda at the Pedra do Sal in the old port.

Samba do Trabalhador, located in Andaraí at the Renascença Clube, has been holding a roots-samba roda every Monday for two decades. Doors open at 4:30 pm, and tickets can be purchased in advance through Sympla. The cost is R$40 (US$8) for half-price and R$80 (US$15) for full price. The event runs late into the evening, with doors filling quickly, so arriving early is recommended. The all-ages crowd enjoys several sets of music throughout the late afternoon and evening.

The Pedra do Sal, situated at Largo João da Baiana in the Saúde district, hosts a free open-air roda on Mondays. This historic stone steps location, the birthplace of Carioca samba, comes alive from around 7 pm onward. Musicians set up at the foot of the hill, and the crowd gathers in the largo, creating a lively atmosphere with beer flowing from nearby bars. The roda is free and cash-based for drinks, making it one of Rio's essential experiences.

Adding to the Monday night lineup is an open choro circle in Flamengo, which keeps the musical energy going until around 10 pm. This circle has been running for eleven years and is free to attend, although musicians can sit in and listeners are asked to keep their voices low. The Vik Muniz show at CCBB in the center of the city also plays on Mondays, providing a cultural alternative before the nightlife starts at 7 pm.

While most other Rio nightclubs remain closed on Mondays, the samba houses, Pedra do Sal roda, and Choro da Esquina ensure that this night remains a rewarding experience for those seeking the city's musical heart.
