Queen Elizabeth’s School in Dubai becomes first UK state school to open in UAE

Queen Elizabeth's School (QE) has opened its doors for the first time in Dubai, marking a significant milestone for the UK state school system in the UAE. The new branch, located in Dubai Sports City, welcomed its inaugural 350 students for the new academic year. The school, which draws its lineage from a grammar school established in 1573, aims to foster a culture of scholarship, a sense of belonging, and small class sizes to ensure every child is known and supported.

Founded by principal Dan Clark, the school's academic philosophy revolves around the concept of students being "comfortably stuck," meaning that the work should be challenging but not overwhelming. With a maximum class size of 20 and Foundation Stage classes capped at 16, the school ensures individual attention for each student. Dedicated teaching assistants are assigned to every class up to Year 6, and staff members bring an average of 12 years of experience, many of whom have previously opened schools.

The school's partnerships extend beyond its immediate environment, including a 30-year alliance with ISD Dubai Sports City, providing access to outdoor pitches, indoor sports facilities, tennis, padel, and table tennis courts. Additionally, an esports lab, a Royal Northern College of Music agreement for masterclasses and performances, and a health and wellness coordinator from King's College Hospital Dubai are all part of the school's infrastructure.

The demand for British curriculum schools in the UAE continues to rise, with the new school joining notable institutions such as Harrow. Educators attribute this growing interest to the structured approach, global recognition, and future optionality that the British curriculum offers. As the UAE hosts one of the largest British international school ecosystems outside the UK, parents are increasingly scrutinizing schools based on how quality is demonstrated and sustained, beyond merely relying on reputation.
