Power sector loses N1.36tn to revenue leakages – NERC

In 2025, Nigeria's power sector experienced a revenue shortfall of approximately N1.36 trillion. This shortfall resulted from power distribution companies failing to bill consumers for electricity worth N694.8 billion and not collecting another N669.5 billion from already issued bills. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) supplied electricity valued at N3.68 trillion during the year but billed customers for only N2.99 trillion, representing a gross billing efficiency of 81.14 percent.

The DisCos collected only N2.32 trillion out of the N2.99 trillion billed, resulting in a collection efficiency of 77.60 percent. The combined billing and collection gap amounted to about N1.36 trillion. Ibadan DisCO recorded the highest energy accounting efficiency at 88.84 percent, while Enugu recorded the lowest at 72.18 percent.

Former senator and businessman, Ben Murray-Bruce, criticized the country's electricity privatization, stating it had failed to deliver the investment and reliability promised to Nigerians. He called for an end to the existing electricity model and suggested a shift towards community-owned, metered solar generation as an alternative.
