Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye To Hold First Strategic Defence Committee Meeting Under Makkah Accord In Istanbul Today

On Monday, high-ranking officials from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan will convene in Istanbul for their inaugural committee meeting under the recently signed "Makkah Joint Defence Agreement." The accord, inked on August 7, unites Sunni Muslim allies grappling with Iran's military actions and regional tensions that have triggered Iranian missile strikes on Gulf oil producers.

The primary objective of the agreement is to bolster collective defense against any acts of aggression, mirroring NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause. An armed attack on any of the three member nations would be considered an assault on all, as per the pact.

The meeting will involve the Foreign and Defense Ministers, along with the Chiefs of Staff from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Discussions are anticipated to revolve around bolstering defense capabilities, enhancing interoperability among armed forces, and deepening cooperation within the defense sector, including joint production and development endeavors.

The nations share apprehensions regarding the military postures of Israel and revolutionary Iran, as the United States endeavors to mitigate the regional turmoil that has precipitated a global energy crisis.

Six months after the US and Israel initiated the war against Iran, negotiations have reached a stalemate, prompting President Donald Trump's administration to intensify financial sanctions on Iran under the guise of an "economic D-Day." Turkey, which boasts NATO's second-largest military, has indicated a willingness to expand the pact to include Egypt, among other potential candidates, and has refrained from attempting to supplant existing alliances.
