Bessent heads to the G20 to rally allies on Iran as tariffs strain ties

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is traveling to the G20 meeting in Asheville, North Carolina to rally the world's largest economies to address the strain on ties caused by the U.S.'s aggressive tariffs on major allies and the unpopular war on Iran. The war, which has been ongoing for six months, is contributing to high gas prices and keeping the country's economy in a challenging position.

During his meetings with G20 finance ministers, Bessent aims to focus on a range of issues that are likely to garner support, such as economic growth, addressing mounting debt, and energy independence. The backdrop for these discussions is Asheville's recent recovery from Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread damage and loss of life in September 2024.

However, the G20 meeting is taking place amid renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, as well as escalating trade tensions with Canada due to a breakdown in negotiations. Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried has warned that the U.S. may struggle to rally its allies and partners under these circumstances, suggesting that greater consultation with allies is necessary.

Bessent seeks international support to isolate Iran and bring about a resolution to the conflict. The U.S. is prepared to impose additional sanctions on a bank and will consider financial measures if necessary. China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, is a particular concern for the administration, which has stated that "all options are on the table" regarding sanctioning Beijing for its continued purchases.

Despite the challenges, Bessent maintains that China and the U.S. agree on the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The G20 meetings in Asheville provide an opportunity for the U.S. to discuss global imbalances, banking regulations, and sovereign debt restructuring for developing countries, all in the context of its broader economic growth agenda.
