Ogun prison: Mother nabbed trying to ‘sneak in drug’ for son on Death Row

A female visitor, identified as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, was arrested on Friday at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The arrest came after routine screening procedures at the prison’s main entrance, where officers discovered a suspicious substance concealed in a sachet of Milo beverage powder.

Ogun State Command’s spokesperson, Odukoya Olayinka, confirmed that the substance was suspected to be the psychoactive synthetic drug “Colos”. According to Olayinka, Mrs Sowunmi was attempting to deliver the package to her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row at the MSCC. The spokesperson stated that Mrs Sowunmi, the mother of the inmate, was immediately detained and later handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

Olayinka commended the security personnel for their vigilance and adherence to security protocols, emphasizing the zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other illegal acts that compromise security within the custody facilities. The latest incident follows a recent scandal at the prison, where a death row inmate, Elijah Oyebode, was found to have hosted TikTok livestreams from behind bars.

The NCoS removed three principal officers following the breach of custodial security and violation of relevant regulations.
