New BI leadership brings experience and stability

Destry Damayanti has made history as Bank Indonesia's first female governor, and alongside her battle-tested leadership team, the central bank aims to provide monetary stability and promote equitable growth amid global market turbulence. On August 26, the House of Representatives Commission XI confirmed Damayanti as the new governor, replacing Perry Warjiyo, who voluntarily stepped down.

The confirmation also included Aida Budiman as senior deputy governor and Umar Juaro as deputy governor, completing the Board of Governors. Their swearing-in before the Supreme Court will officially mark the start of their tenure, allowing them to focus on steering monetary policy in coordination with fiscal authorities for stable, equitable economic growth.

The selection process for these highly qualified candidates, promoted internally, faced no significant pushback during vetting, demonstrating their competence. While market reactions may be unpredictable, investors are expected to trust the professionalism of this lineup. They will undoubtedly face various economic challenges, but their deep institutional experience and close coordination with the Finance Ministry should keep the macroeconomy steady.

During her presentation before Commission XI, Damayanti shared her vision for leading BI, known as Sinergi Merah Putih (Red and White Synergy), with the goal of enhancing the welfare of the Indonesian people. Her central bank will strive for macroeconomic stability, economic growth, and long-term sustainability. She also highlighted the turbulent global backdrop, with challenges such as geopolitical risks, cooling economic growth, financial market volatility, persistent inflation, shifting capital flows, and rapid digitalization.

To tackle these headwinds, she outlined strategic priorities for her leadership, including fine-tuning monetary, macroprudential, and payment system tools, optimizing data governance, effectively managing foreign exchange flows, and working closely with the government and key stakeholders to foster a stronger, higher-income Indonesia.
