Nepal floods: Death toll nears 1,000 as 4,793 remain missing

Severe flooding near Nepal's border with China has claimed the lives of at least 903 individuals, while the number of people still unaccounted for has risen to 4,247, according to Nepal's disaster authority. Rescue operations are in their sixth day, with Chinese state media reporting 16 fatalities and 546 missing in Tibet as a result of the disaster on Wednesday, raising the overall death count to 919 and the missing to 4,793.

Among the missing are 592 foreigners and 933 workers on hydropower projects along the river that the floodwaters swept through, as reported by Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The disaster agency listed 3,655 missing citizens in its Monday morning update, with Nuwakot district seeing a sharp increase to 1,158 missing, up from 115 on Sunday, and an additional 562 unaccounted for in Rasuwa district.

The missing list includes 45 Nepali army soldiers, 38 police and armed police officers, and 19 customs and immigration officers. Meanwhile, Indian authorities in Uttar Pradesh state have recovered 17 bodies from rivers originating in Nepal, believed to be flood victims, but these bodies are not included in the toll.
