Nepal flood disaster: 590 foreign nationals still missing

A 41-year-old Israeli woman has gone missing in Nepal following a series of devastating floods that have claimed nearly 800 lives and left over 3,000 people missing, according to reports. Israel's Consulate in Kathmandu and the Foreign Ministry's Situation Center are working closely with the woman's family and local authorities to locate her.

This marks the second Israeli citizen reported missing in the aftermath of the natural disaster. The first missing Israeli was confirmed on Thursday, with tourism officials notifying ZAKA, Israel's search and rescue organization, of the situation. Israel's Foreign Ministry has issued a warning to its citizens to avoid traveling to the region due to the ongoing natural disaster.

Nepal's disaster management authority reported that 933 individuals have been missing from hydropower projects in the affected area. The Red Cross estimates that more than 90,000 people are likely impacted by the disaster, which China has attributed to the impact of climate change. As the bodies, many unidentified, decompose in the humid weather in the plains of the Himalayan nation, they are being buried in shallow graves.

China has confirmed that 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, including in Tibet near a crucial border crossing with Nepal, are unaccounted for. In response to the disaster, China's state-run CCTV reported that over 2,100 rescue workers have been mobilized, and at least $33 million has been allocated to support relief efforts.

Chinese soldiers are using advanced life-detection equipment to search for the missing. However, rescue operations have been temporarily halted due to adverse weather conditions and the risk of further flooding from a lake formed across the Nepal-China border by the disaster, which began overflowing into Nepal's rivers.
