Nathaniel Idowu Summer Camp ends on high note

The 2026 Nathaniel Idowu Summer Camp concluded on a successful note at the New Maracana Sports Complex in Tolu, Lagos, last weekend. Over 500 children and 200 parents gathered for the closing ceremony. The four-week program, organized by Peakline Sports World Ltd and supported by the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, emphasized grassroots sports development, mentorship, and character building among the youth.

Twenty certified coaches and seven ad-hoc staff members oversaw the participants throughout the programme, with meals, medical support, and transport allowances also provided.

Yemi Idowu, founder of the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, emphasized the camp's aim to provide children in Ajegunle with a chance to develop through sports. He expressed satisfaction in seeing 500 kids attending the event and their parents showing support, stating that the initiative is a step in the right direction and that they are dedicated to continuing talent development "from the ground up."

The closing ceremony included basketball activities, with Idowu promising to construct a new basketball court at the Maracana Sports Complex to serve as a permanent training facility for the children.

The Foundation's commitment to promoting girls' participation in football was highlighted, with the induction of 32 new female players during the ceremony. These 32 players will join the 30 already receiving training as part of the Foundation's long-term talent development program. To sustain the growth of the participants, 300 standout performers were chosen to continue with weekend training sessions. Gear 'em Up, a US-based organization led by Khadija and Marvelous, provided sports kits for the participants.

Parents at the closing ceremony expressed gratitude to the organizers for providing free registration, coaching, meals, medical support, and transport assistance throughout the camp. The organizers stated that the program would continue to identify and develop young talents while using sports to foster discipline, education, and inclusion among children in Lagos.
