Musk refuses to allow Starlink use for strikes inside Russia

According to sources, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has remained steadfast in his refusal to allow Starlink satellites to be utilized for drone strikes inside Russian territory. This stance has been reiterated despite repeated requests from Ukrainian officials, as reported by The Kyiv Independent on August 31. Although the Financial Times, citing unidentified sources, reported on August 30 that Musk had indicated a willingness to permit Ukraine to employ drones equipped with Starlink to target Russian locations, the ultimate decision would be left to the White House, according to the report.

Despite these claims, Musk's position has not altered, and sources have confirmed that he does not envision Starlink being employed for operations inside Russia as a means to bring about an end to the conflict. One source noted that Musk seeks a resolution to the war rather than its escalation. The conversations between Musk and former Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov on this matter were described as "extremely unsuccessful," with sources stating that as a result, Musk ultimately decided against authorizing Ukraine to use Starlink for such targeted strikes.

Following the discussions with Fedorov, Musk's aides indicated that the decision to deploy Starlink-equipped drones for strikes inside Russia should be determined by the Trump administration. However, a Ukrainian official clarified that the White House had asserted that the decision should be made by SpaceX. On August 21, the Financial Times had also reported, citing sources, that Ukraine was seeking Musk's consent to deploy Starlink-equipped attack drones to target Russian missile launchers located up to 200 kilometers within Russia.
