800 jet drones in four days: Russia is now firing type Ukraine’s interceptors cannot catch

In the past four days, Russia has launched over 1,500 drones at Ukraine, with more than half of them being jet-powered, according to Colonel Yurii Ihnat of Ukraine's Air Force Command. The majority of these attacks targeted Kyiv and the surrounding region, which began on August 27th, following a visit by CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow. The CIA Director's visit was reportedly related to efforts to negotiate an end to Russia's war against Ukraine, as reported by Sky News.

Ukraine previously intercepted about 88 to 90 percent of all drones launched, but the success rate against jet-powered drones is significantly lower due to their speed, which is three times faster and harder to shoot down compared to traditional drones. The interceptor drones of Ukraine reach approximately 300 kilometers per hour, making it impossible for them to catch targets flying at around five kilometers altitude, beyond the reach of mobile fire teams and portable surface-to-air missile systems.

In July, Russia began using jet-powered UAVs in large numbers, launching five times as many as the previous month. The number of these drones may increase further by the end of August. The attacks come from various directions, and the debris of recovered Shaheds indicates that they were manufactured just two weeks earlier, meaning production is ongoing.

Banderols, which combine features of drones and missiles and fly at up to 600 kilometers per hour, have also been increasingly used by Russia. These are harder to shoot down, and short-range surface-to-air missile systems and aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles are employed against them. The jet-powered drones are considerably more expensive than conventional ones, as noted by Colonel Ihnat.

The strikes have targeted specific locations in Ukraine, including logistics and shopping centers, postal terminals, critical infrastructure, and other strategic sites. This has resulted in the destruction of approximately 90 percent of Ukraine's modern warehouse space in recent weeks, which has slowed grain exports through the Black Sea corridor.
