Met Gala 2027 Scraps John Galliano Theme Amid Controversy Over Designer’s Past

The Met Gala’s annual event, which typically celebrates a particular theme through fashion showcases, has altered its plans for next spring's exhibition. The decision comes after John Galliano, a renowned fashion designer, pulled out due to backlash over his past antisemitic comments. Galliano personally decided not to participate, stating that an exhibition honoring his work would be painful for some, given the controversy surrounding his remarks.

In response to Galliano's withdrawal, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the Costume Institute exhibition and the associated gala would no longer focus on his work. The museum and Vogue, which oversees the Met Gala, acknowledged his decision as "very courageous."

John Galliano, who was previously the creative director at Dior, expressed gratitude to The Met, Vogue, and Anna Wintour, the event's overseer. He acknowledged the impact of his past words, particularly the hurt caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and expressed deep regret. Wintour praised Galliano's imagination and exceptional craft, noting that his legacy transcends his controversial past.

The news of Galliano's withdrawal was announced in early August, sparking immediate criticism due to his history of antisemitic and racist comments. His fall from grace, including being fired from Dior, led to his 15-year journey of sobriety and recovery.

The Met and Vogue had been upfront about Galliano's controversial past in their initial announcement for the 2027 exhibit, marking him as the third living designer to receive an individual Costume Institute showcase. The exhibition had been designed to grapple with the full arc of his career, including the dark aspects of his past.

Galliano's departure leaves open the question of how the Met Gala will adapt before next May's event, traditionally attended by celebrities showcasing avant-garde outfits inspired by the annual theme.
