Man, 21, jailed over 'brutal' murder of Cork postman

A 21-year-old man, Alex Deady, from Glen View, Convent Road in Doneraile, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of 44-year-old Cork postman Barry Daly. The judge, Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford, described the incident as a "brutal action" in which the golf club-wielding attacker inflicted catastrophic head and facial injuries on the victim.

Deady, along with two teenage boys, aged 16, 17, and 17, was convicted of murdering Daly in the early hours of October 12th last year outside his home at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile. Two of the minors pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but only one accepted the guilt of murder, which was later accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ms Justice Lankford acknowledged that Deady does not accept the murder verdict but accepts causing Daly's death, and will receive a lengthy prison sentence. The judge also noted the profound impact of Daly's death on the local community, recognizing his kindness towards older people, especially while working as a postman. The two juveniles will be sentenced on September 11th.
