Lionel Messi retires from international football

Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football, ending his Argentina career after a disappointing World Cup final loss to Spain in July. The 39-year-old, widely considered the greatest player of all time, had aimed to lead his team to back-to-back tournament victories but fell short with a 1-0 defeat to Spain in extra time.

Messi made 207 appearances for Argentina, the second most by any men's international footballer, and scored 125 goals across a career spanning over two decades. Despite his decision to retire, Messi continued to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, scoring four goals in a 7-1 win over Montreal. The announcement came two days after Argentina's defeat to Spain, following the passing of Messi's father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68.

Messi expressed his decision in an emotional Instagram post, acknowledging the pain of the decision but understanding that it was time to move on. He thanked his family, coaches, teammates, and officials for their support throughout his long career and announced that young players would now have the opportunity to represent Argentina.
