Lionel Messi announces retirement from international football

Lionel Messi has declared his retirement from international football, marking the conclusion of an illustrious 20-year tenure with the Argentina national team. In a poignant farewell statement, the 39-year-old captain disclosed his decision, which coincides with the recent loss of his father and longstanding agent, Jorge Messi. After two decades of unwavering dedication to Argentina, Messi asserts that he has no further contributions to make and highlights the emergence of a new generation of players ready to assume leadership roles.

His illustrious international career is marked by both heartbreak and glory, including Argentina's victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and subsequent Copa América triumphs. Messi's career apex occurred when he led Argentina to their first World Cup title since 1986, scoring crucial goals in the final and shootout. Despite a narrow 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Messi's legacy as Argentina's leading goalscorer and assist provider, as well as the second-highest scorer in World Cup history, remains unassailable.

Messi's retirement signifies the end of a remarkable era for Argentine football, as he steps aside not only from the captaincy and record-breaking feats but also as the figure who helped restore Argentina's standing in the global football arena.
