Lebanon calls for Greece to help implement deal with Israel

Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun called on Greece on Monday to assist in implementing a US-backed agreement with Israel, following a multibillion-dollar arms deal between the two nations. Aoun, speaking in Athens alongside Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas, expressed Lebanon's desire to end hostilities, stating that the framework agreement cannot be implemented unilaterally.

Since the latest war between Israel and Lebanon erupted in March, Aoun's country has endured over 4,300 casualties, more than 12,000 injuries, and destruction of between 60 to 70 villages. Aoun, urging Greece's support for Lebanon's army and full Israeli withdrawal, also hoped for Greece's backing at the United Nations to renew the mandate of Unifil peacekeeping force, which has served as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis affirmed Greece's commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, and unity, and support for de-escalation and mutual understanding.
