Lebanon calls for Greece to help implement deal with Israel

President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon called on Greece on Monday to assist in implementing a US-backed agreement between Lebanon and Israel. This comes in the wake of a multibillion-dollar arms deal that was recently announced between Greece and Israel. The talks between Israel and Lebanon aimed at ending hostilities began after Iran-backed Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the Middle East conflict in March by attacking Israel. In response, Israel carried out massive strikes and launched a ground invasion.

Aoun, speaking at a meeting in Athens with Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas, emphasized that the Lebanese people are weary of wars and have been seeking an end to hostilities since the beginning of negotiations with Israel. He stated that the framework agreement cannot be implemented unilaterally and requires cooperation from both sides.

Aoun highlighted the devastating impact of the recent Israeli attacks, which have resulted in the deaths of over 4,300 people in Lebanon, wounded more than 12,000 others, and destroyed between 60 and 70 villages. He warned that resolving the issue through military force would not be successful.

During a press conference with Aoun, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed Greece's support for Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, and unity. He pledged Greece's backing for all efforts aimed at de-escalation and mutual understanding. Aoun reiterated his demand for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces and Lebanese state control across the country, emphasizing his government's commitment to disarming Hezbollah.

Aoun expressed hope for Greece's assistance on the international stage, particularly at the United Nations, where discussions are underway regarding the continuation of a UN role in south Lebanon. However, the US and Israel oppose renewing Unifil's mandate, which is set to expire at the end of this year. Greece and Israel recently announced the acquisition of a $3.5 billion aerial defense system from Israel.
