Last-minute iPhone Ultra report shoots down Apple Pencil — but this is how it could have worked

With the iPhone Ultra launch just days away on September 9, a recent report confirms what many suspected: the new device will not come with a new Apple Pencil. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed the Apple Pencil would have been "stubbier" than current models to align with the iPhone Ultra's height, and it would have magnetically attached to the side for storage and charging, much like an iPad.

However, unlike the iPad, this design would have made it uncomfortable to hold the phone and charge the stylus simultaneously. Additionally, the report suggests the Apple Pencil could have left unsightly marks on the iPhone Ultra's delicate inner screen, which might be why Apple is reportedly shying away from including the stylus.

While this may disappoint potential buyers who wished to use the iPhone Ultra as a full-fledged iPad replacement, it seems unlikely to dampen excitement about the upcoming foldable smartphone. The report doesn't completely rule out a future Apple Pencil for the Ultra, but it's evident that the device is unlikely to launch with one due to the "unsightly marks" issue and Apple's desire to stay true to Steve Jobs' original vision of an anti-stylus iPhone.

Despite this, Tom's Guide journalist expresses optimism about the iPhone Ultra, despite concerns about its stylus compatibility, and remains eager to get their hands on the latest foldable from Apple.
