Sabah, a Malaysian state, is characterized by a rich tapestry of ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and historical diversity which plays a crucial role in shaping its identity, according to the National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang. In a recent Facebook post marking Sabah Day, the minister emphasized that Sabah is home to 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups, each contributing unique languages, traditions, attire, music, dance, and heritage. These elements collectively form Sabah's unique identity.

The minister highlighted that the diversity of ethnic groups in Sabah, including Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, Murut, Rungus, Bisaya, Lotud, Lundayeh, and many others, has not hindered harmony but rather strengthened it. When people understand, respect, and accept each other's differences, they can build a harmonious society. The diversity in languages, beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles has demonstrated that harmony can indeed be achieved when there is mutual understanding, respect, and acceptance among all.

31 August holds a special significance in Sabah's historical journey, spanning the era of North Borneo, British administration, Japanese occupation, and finally, independence in 1963, which led to the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. Aaron Dagang encouraged the community not to forget the contributions of earlier generations who worked tirelessly to build Sabah.

He stressed that the responsibility to lead Sabah forward now lies with the current generation, especially the younger ones, who need to boldly advance the state in education, economy, technology, and development while preserving the state's history, culture, and identity.

As for 2024, the state government plans to officially designate 31 August as Sabah Day.
