Sabah, a state in Malaysia, is renowned for its diverse ethnic groups, comprising 35 main ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups. These groups contribute to a rich tapestry of language, tradition, clothing, music, dance, and unique heritage, which jointly form the identity of Sabah, according to Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Aaron Ago Dagang.

In an emotional Facebook post marking Sabah Day, Mr. Dagang emphasized that the ethnic, linguistic, traditional, and cultural diversity of Sabah is a primary strength of the state and reflects the strength of Malaysia as a multi-ethnic nation. He listed Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, Murut, Rungus, Bisaya, Lotud, Lundayeh, and numerous other communities who together have shaped the Sabah identity today.

Mr. Dagang further noted that diversity is not a barrier to harmony, but rather a source of strength when society understands, respects, and accepts each other. He stressed that the ethnic diversity of Sabah, with its contrasting languages, beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles, has demonstrated that harmony can be built when people understand, respect, and accept one another.

Mr. Dagang highlighted that August 31 holds special significance in Sabah's historical journey, which encompasses the era of North Borneo, British administration, Japanese rule, and finally, self-governance in 1963. He also reminded the public not to forget the contributions of past generations who devoted their efforts, ideas, and sacrifices to build Sabah.

According to him, the responsibility to lead Sabah forward now lies with the younger generation, especially the youth of Sabah. "Today's generation must be bold in leading Sabah forward in education, economy, technology, and development while preserving the state's history, culture, and identity," he concluded.
