John Ternus to lead Apple into the age of AI

On Tuesday, Apple appointed John Ternus as its new chief executive. Ternus, who has been with the company since 2001, will be tasked with steering the tech giant into the age of artificial intelligence. Apple currently leads the smartphone market but lags behind in AI development. Ternus' major challenge will be balancing Apple's reliance on China while facing political pressure from the White House. This handover ends Tim Cook's 15-year tenure, replacing the supply chain specialist with the hardware engineer.

Ternus took over Apple's design team in 2001 and worked his way up to senior vice president of hardware engineering. He oversees the engineering teams responsible for Apple's entire product lineup, including the highly profitable iPhones. With barely a week to settle in, Ternus faces an expectant audience at Apple's annual iPhone event on September 9, where a foldable handset is expected to be unveiled.

Tim Cook's departure left the house in good order, according to Dan Ives, a partner at investment firm Yorkville Ives & Co. However, Ternus must now define the AI chapter of Apple's future. Analysts suggest that Ternus should focus on hardware innovation while preserving Cook's supply chain. Some analysts initially thought Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief, was a better fit for AI, but analysts argue that consumers still prioritize hardware purchases, making Ternus' hardware focus crucial.

Ternus earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and has been credited with driving Apple's push for more durable, reliable, and environmentally friendly products. However, the bigger challenge for Ternus is his new CEO role. Even those familiar with him as an engineer may not recognize his leadership style as a CEO.

The geopolitical role Cook excelled at, navigating relations with China and the White House, will be new for Ternus. Cook, who remains executive chairman, will focus on engaging policymakers worldwide, freeing Ternus from this role for the time being. The September 9 iPhone event marks the first public measure of the handover, with Ternus expected to lead the discussion on the company's new AI-focused direction.
