John Galliano's Met Gala exhibit canceled amid backlash

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has canceled a planned exhibition featuring designer John Galliano's work and the 2027 Met Gala due to mounting backlash over the British designer's past antisemitic and racist comments. Galliano announced on social media that after much reflection with all involved, he has decided the exhibition should not take place, expressing deep sadness.

The Met confirmed the cancellation in a statement, citing the harmful impact of Galliano's past remarks. Galliano, known for his dramatic designs, faced significant controversy in 2010 and 2011, leading to his dismissal from Christian Dior and a hate crime conviction in France. Met Gala chair Anna Wintour praised Galliano's decision, calling it "very courageous," while Jewish community leaders, including New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, strongly opposed the exhibition.

Galliano, who transformed Dior and Maison Margiela, was set to be the third living designer to have a solo show at the Met's Costume Institute. The Met will announce details of the new spring exhibition and 2027 Met Gala at a later date.
