5 surprises (and explanations) from Broncos' initial 53-man roster

The Denver Broncos made 38 roster moves this weekend to reach an initial 53-man roster for the 2026 NFL season. The team only had two truly contested roster spots going into their preseason finale, according to general manager George Paton. The preseason finale was simply the cherry on top of a well-established roster, as many players played well regardless of how the game turned out. There were a few surprising cuts, but each had a clear explanation.

First, fullback Adam Prentice, a reliable player from last season who scored two touchdowns in preseason action, was cut. As a vested veteran, Prentice would not be able to be claimed by another team via the NFL's waiver wire, so the Broncos decided to keep him on the practice squad. His 2026 salary would not be guaranteed if he wasn't on the Week 1 active roster, but he's expected to eventually be fully promoted to the active roster.

Second, running back Jaleel McLaughlin was cut in favor of Tyler Badie, who had previously beaten out McLaughlin for the RB3 duties the previous summer. McLaughlin is arguably more talented, but Badie's special teams contributions and pass-blocking skills were considered crucial factors in the decision.

Third, tight end Justin Joly, a fifth-round draft pick, struggled during preseason. While he would have been cut regardless of his draft position, the Broncos emphasized that they still liked the player and believed he would have a successful career. Joly could be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Fourth, linebacker Red Murdock was cut despite his impressive preseason performance, as the Broncos opted to go with Karene Reid and Jordan Turner as the backup inside linebackers. Both Murdock and Joly will be priority practice squad targets if they clear waivers.

Finally, the Broncos cut both of their long snappers, Mitchell Fraboni and Luke Basso. Fraboni, a vested veteran, will be allowed to re-sign with the practice squad and eventually be fully promoted to the active roster.
