Jammu and Kashmir MBBS, BDS interns launch indefinite strike over low stipend, seek hike to Rs 30,000

MBBS and BDS interns in Jammu and Kashmir are on indefinite strike demanding a monthly stipend increase from Rs 12,300 to Rs 30,000. The interns have been performing the same duties for seven years without any increase in their already low stipend, which has remained unchanged despite repeated demands. Dr Shahnawaz, a protesting intern, highlighted that the cost of living and stipends in other states have risen significantly, making the current stipend inadequate.

He stated that interns, who work in emergency departments, OPDs, wards, and perform rural postings, receive only Rs 400 per day. Dr Abhinav Bhat, another protester, mentioned that a committee recommended increasing the stipend to around Rs 25,000 in 2025-26, but the issue remains unresolved. The interns are seeking a written assurance from the government and are demanding the stipend to be raised to Rs 30,000 to keep pace with inflation and the workload they handle.
