Iran war live: IRGC attacks US bases in Jordan after US bombs Larak Island

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran announced it had launched an attack on US military bases in Jordan as a response to a US strike on Larak Island. The attack, named "Punishment of the Aggressor," targeted the King Hussein and Al Azraq bases. Iranian state media reported the operation, which was aimed at destroying technical and repair infrastructure, as well as the enemy's fighter deployment sites.

The IRGC asserted that these strikes would demonstrate Iran's resolve to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz and that any aggression would be met with even more devastating responses. The reported assault followed the US strike on two IRGC rocket launchers on Larak Island, a strategically important Iranian island situated near the Strait of Hormuz.

A US official confirmed that earlier that day, US forces had struck two Iranian launchers on the island, while Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported several Iranian fighters and civilians were killed or wounded. The IRGC vowed retaliation, warning that further attacks would result in more severe consequences. The Larak Island operation marked the first US military action against Iran in over a month, with the last US strike on Iranian targets occurring in late July.

Since then, the Trump administration has intensified pressure on Tehran through economic measures in an attempt to bring Iran back to negotiations. The US military had recently completed mine-clearing operations along shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global trade route responsible for carrying roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

A spokesperson for US Central Command stated that US forces would monitor the region closely and remain prepared to safeguard the free flow of commerce through this vital waterway.
