Indore Heritage: Ancient Shiva Temples & Champa Bavdi At Lalbagh Await Restoration

Indore's Lalbagh Palace is undergoing a makeover by the Archaeology Department in collaboration with the Tourism Department. However, several heritage structures within and around the historic complex continue to suffer from neglect. Among these are the Champa Bavdi stepwell and two ancient Shiva temples. The once-pristine Champa Bavdi has fallen into disrepair due to a damaged boundary wall, leading people to discard garbage and religious items within its premises.

The steps and stones of the structure are broken. Similarly, one Shiva temple near Champa Bavdi, believed to have been constructed before 1836 during Maharaja Yashwantrao Holkar II's reign, requires conservation. While its architecture is distinctive, parts of its pathway, flooring, and plaster have deteriorated. Another historic Shiva temple situated near the river also necessitates restoration.

While a proposal has been prepared for the conservation of Champa Bavdi and the temple complex, it remains pending. With preparations for Simhastha 2028 underway, heritage experts believe that urgent conservation measures are required. Restoring these neglected sites, enhancing cleanliness, lighting, and accessibility, could transform them into significant heritage attractions, complementing the already revamped Lalbagh Palace.
