ICJ Judge calls for stronger global commitment to human rights and peace

Judge Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has called for a stronger global commitment to human rights and peace, emphasizing the crucial role of an independent judiciary in upholding these principles. Speaking at CMR University's School of Legal Studies in Bengaluru, Judge Brant highlighted the evolving nature of human rights as a shared global responsibility.

He stressed the importance of impartial legal mechanisms in addressing contemporary challenges, such as climate change and environmental protection. He noted the growing conflicts and uncertainties worldwide, urging civil society to actively engage in protecting fundamental rights and fostering hope for a peaceful and just society.

Ashok G. Nijagannavar, a member of the Karnataka Law Commission and former judge of the Karnataka High Court, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Indian Constitution's dedication to social justice and human rights. He called for addressing systemic injustice and crimes against humanity with seriousness and collective responsibility.
