Court order, not Senator Nwoye, halted Nsugbe Igweship election, documents reveal

The disruption of the planned Nsugbe Igweship election in Anambra East LGA was caused by a court order, not by the actions of Senator Tony Nwoye, according to documents obtained from the Awka Judicial Division. The Caretaker Committee, headed by Mr. Sunday Attah, initially claimed that Senator Nwoye led a group to the election venue and disrupted proceedings.

However, court records dispute this, revealing that a preservative order was issued on August 5, 2026, by Hon. Justice Jude Obiora, restraining any election or selection of an Igwe for Nsugbe until a substantive case is decided. The plaintiffs in the case, including Chukwuma Omenyi and others, filed Suit No. OT/237/2026 on July 8, 2026, seeking to decide the authenticity of competing constitutional documents related to the Igwe position.

The court granted limited preservative orders, preventing any election from taking place on August 8, 2026, and directed all parties to maintain the status quo until the dispute is resolved. Despite the court's intervention, Mr. Attah maintained that his committee had the authority to conduct the election, and the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, who is from Nsugbe, had no involvement in the arrangements.

The case remains unresolved as of August 7, 2026, and the outcome will determine whether the rotational turn to produce the next traditional ruler passes to another quarter.
