I left New York and a six-figure job to move back to India. H-1B restrictions made it easier to walk away.

Disha Lamba, a 28-year-old woman from India, moved back to her home country in May 2026 after a stint in the United States. Born and raised in India, Lamba enrolled at NYU in 2021 to pursue a master's degree in computer engineering. She initially loved her life in the US, experiencing newfound confidence, ambition, and connections in her chosen field. However, as time went on, Lamba missed her family and grew weary of the restrictions that came with holding an H-1B visa.

Lamba opted to return to India, a decision she finds worthwhile. She now resides in Gurugram with her family, working in the healthcare industry. While she acknowledges the pros of the US job market and culture, she feels much happier and fulfilled in India, where she has the freedom to explore additional career opportunities without the burden of visa restrictions.

Lamba admits that she still laments the absence of New York's skyline and the convenience of house help, but she believes the advantages of staying in India outweigh the sacrifices she made.
