Hafidz Win’s collection of Merdeka memories

Malaysia's Abdul Hafidz Win has a passion for collecting historical items, particularly those related to Merdeka, the country's Independence Day. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive collection of antiques, retro memorabilia, and souvenirs from around the world. Nestled within his collection are items commemorating Merdeka, a subset that holds a special place in his heart.

Hafidz, a 57-year-old chartered accountant from Muar, Johor, initially kept his collection at home. However, as it grew, he moved it to a dedicated display space in Bandar Tun Razak. Today, he rents out some of the vintage items for events, film, and television productions under the name Koleksi Malaya.

Among his most cherished items are those connected to his family's history, such as his grandmother's cooking utensils and wedding keepsakes. Hafidz finds the collection therapeutic and enjoyable, describing it as a form of stress management. He admits to not keeping track of the exact number of items in his collection, as he is an accountant but has never done a stock take.

The gallery features items such as vintage mugs and glasses emblazoned with "Merdeka," dating from 1957 to the 2000s, as well as a replica of Tunku Abdul Rahman's identity card. The walls are adorned with images commemorating Merdeka, public figures, and events from the country's history.

Hafidz believes that many younger Malaysians are unaware of the country's past and hopes that his collection can help them appreciate the sacrifices made in building the nation. For this year's Merdeka celebrations, he simply wishes for Malaysians to come together without division and build a great nation together.
