Grindr wants to be the everything app for gay men; investors are still deciding whether it can pull it off

George Arison became CEO of Grindr in 2022, inheriting a company that had been through a tumultuous ownership history. Despite generating significant revenue, the business lacked a clear product or strategy. Four years later, Grindr has experienced remarkable growth, with revenue expected to triple from $195 million in 2022 to $540 million-plus this year, while maintaining adjusted EBITDA margins above 40%.

The growth has primarily been driven by increasing revenue from existing customers rather than attracting new users. Currently, 9% of Grindr's user base pays for the service, but average revenue per user has significantly increased since 2022. CEO Arison is focused on finding the next growth engine for the company.

Arison's vision for Grindr includes transforming it into a comprehensive platform for the LGBTQ+ community, known as the "gayborhood in your pocket." This would encompass dating, hookups, healthcare (including ED medication and HIV prevention), and travel services. The company is also developing a premium subscription called EDGE, which integrates AI-powered features to improve matchmaking. However, the EDGE tier has faced criticism from some online users.

Arison previously founded Shift Technologies, an online used-car marketplace, and took it public through a SPAC in 2020. He is leveraging his experience to drive Grindr's growth and challenge the market's perception of the company's value. Despite the stock trading at a 35% discount to its peers based on 2027 EBITDA, Arison believes this discount may not be justified.
