Google Wallet for Android adds 11th digital state ID, first addition in 10 months

Google Wallet for Android has reintroduced support for Ohio state IDs after a 10-month hiatus. The update is the 11th digital state ID added to the service. To enable Ohio IDs, open the Google Wallet app, select the "plus" button next to "View more" at the bottom, then choose "IDs & personal info," and finally "Driver's license or state ID."

Ohio joins a list of 12 states, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Puerto Rico. The card design features the Northern Cardinal, Ohio's state bird.

Setting up the Ohio ID involves taking photos of the front and back of the physical card, as well as a short video of the user's face for verification. The process is sent to the Ohio BMV for review and can take a few minutes. A notification will confirm when the ID is available, with an email confirmation from the state agency sent as well.

An "Activity history" option is available by tapping "Details" next to "Show code." Driver's license information, including the license number, date of expiry, address, and more, can be viewed through the ID.

Although the digital ID can be read via NFC or by scanning the QR code, it is not a replacement for carrying the physical card. The device must be running Android 8+ and have a screen lock, Bluetooth, and Nearby devices enabled. The state ID can be deleted from Google Wallet at any time, or remotely through myaccount.google.com. As a private pass, it is not synced to the cloud and remains exclusive to one device.
