GNFS Launches Automated Fire Compliance System

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has introduced its Automated Fire Compliance and Safety System (AFCAS) to streamline the online application process for fire permits, certificates, and fire equipment tagging. This move is part of the Service's digital transformation efforts and aligns with the Fire Precaution (Premises) Regulations, 2003 (L.I.

1724), as amended by L.I. 2249. Under these regulations, every commercial and residential property in the country must obtain a fire permit before construction and a fire certificate upon completion. Additionally, fire alarms, equipment, and extinguishers must be tagged with official GNFS tags for inspection. The AFCAS platform aims to enhance service delivery, ensure regulatory compliance, and improve enforcement, monitoring, and administration of fire safety across the nation.

All stakeholders, including vehicle owners, residential and commercial property owners, and building occupants, are now required to submit applications through the AFCAS portal, which is accessible at afcas.gnfs.gov.gh. The public is also advised to purchase fire extinguishers and equipment bearing official GNFS AFCAS tags from licensed Fire Protection Contractors.

Procurement departments in property management, commercial operations, institutions, businesses, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) must engage only GNFS-AFCAS licensed contractors for fire alarm, extinguisher, and safety equipment installation. All installed equipment must be tagged with an official GNFS-AFCAS QR code.

Imported fire equipment will be tagged at the point of entry, while existing equipment owners have six months from the publication date to arrange for GNFS-authorised inspection and tagging. An information brochure containing application process guidelines is available on the platform, and stakeholders are encouraged to review it before submitting their applications.
