From “Lost puppy” to history maker: Pato O’Ward goes into IndyCar record books with single-day Milwaukee sweep

At The Milwaukee Mile, Pato O’Ward made history by sweeping the doubleheader, becoming the first IndyCar driver since Rick Mears in 1981 to win two races on the same day. The 27-year-old Mexican driver, in his #5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, claimed both checkered flags, marking him as only the seventh driver in IndyCar history to achieve this feat.

Joining a prestigious list of names like Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Dan Gurney, Johnny Rutherford, and Rick Mears, O’Ward remains focused on carving his own legacy, acknowledging the weight of these comparisons. Despite the pressure, he stays dedicated to his craft, aiming to challenge himself and others on the track.

Throughout the relentless day of racing, O’Ward led an impressive 119 laps in Race 1, ultimately securing the win with a final lap pass of David Malukas. In Race 2, he continued his dominance, leading 55 laps and edging out Scott McLaughlin for his third victory at the Milwaukee Mile and third of 2026. This sweep not only highlights an all-or-nothing season for O’Ward, with only three podium appearances this year, but also elevates him to fourth in the championship standings, entering the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with a strong chance at second place.
