FIFA president Infantino 'must go', says ex-UEFA boss Platini

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has called for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to step down amid a series of scandals plaguing the world football governing body. Infantino, 56, has faced criticism since his attempt to introduce private investment into FIFA events like the World Cup. Former UEFA president Platini, speaking on Canal+, accused Infantino of disregarding the rules of the game and failing in his role as the guarantor of football's regulations.

He highlighted issues such as the excessive hydration breaks at the World Cup and the extended halftime show during the final. Platini emphasized that Infantino must adhere to the rules and cannot ignore them. The ex-UEFA boss also criticized Infantino's handling of the red card ban controversy and the FIFA Forward Enterprises plan, which aimed to bring in private investment.

Platini accused Infantino of "criminal mismanagement" and "love for money and power." While Platini was acquitted of fraud charges in 2025, he continues to sue Infantino and other former FIFA officials in France, alleging a criminal conspiracy to prevent him from being elected FIFA president in 2015.
