Ex-congressman George Santos banned from betting platform for life

Online prediction market Kalshi has placed a permanent ban on former US congressman George Santos, the platform stated on Wednesday. The ban follows an investigation into Santos' betting activity on his own presence at President Donald Trump's State of the Union address in February. Kalshi's compliance team concluded that Santos' actions exhibited signs of insider dealing, leading to the lifetime restriction. The company decided to act promptly without waiting for external enforcement procedures.

Santos expressed his approval of the ban on social media platform X, questioning the longevity of the organization. In 2025, Santos was released from a seven-year prison term for wire fraud and identity theft, having served three months. In July, he settled a federal investigation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission related to his State of the Union trades, paying a fine of $35,000.

The penalties imposed on Santos are part of an increasing trend in the prediction markets industry, as platforms face heightened scrutiny. Both Kalshi and its rival Polymarket have reported an increase in unusual trading patterns, prompting these organizations to enhance their monitoring systems and respond more firmly to possible misconduct. Kalshi's decision to ban Santos was prompted by internal alerts indicating suspicious behavior linked to the former congressman's account.

The case centered on a series of significant bets placed by Santos between February 2 and February 25, some of which were based on false or misleading public statements regarding his attendance at Trump's speech. Despite these actions, Santos earned $17,839.57 from the trades. Santos has denied any wrongdoing in various matters but admitted to identity theft involving nearly a dozen individuals, including next of kin.

He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, serving three months in prison before President Trump commuted his sentence last year. Santos embellished his biography prior to his election to Congress in 2022 and was the sixth individual in US history to be expelled from the House of Representatives. This incident sheds light on the growing compliance challenges faced by prediction markets as they gain mainstream popularity and attract a larger user base.

Regulators have signaled that these platforms will be required to adhere to stricter standards as the industry matures, especially when dealing with political or economic events.
