Dharavi Sector 6 Rehabilitation Gains Momentum As 61 Hutment Owners Agree To Vacate Structures

Mumbai's Dharavi Sector 6 is seeing progress in the rehabilitation process as 61 out of 85 hutment owners have agreed to vacate their homes. The 24 families still holding out have been given until September 10 to complete the necessary steps and leave. Earlier notices for demolition were issued on August 21 for non-cooperation with public infrastructure work.

Of the 16 identified for demolition, four were cleared recently by police after residents resisted cooperation. The project's official said this latest step is crucial for clearing land for rehabilitation construction. So far, 2,702 families have signed rental agreements, while 1,729 have vacated. Discussions held with residents addressed their relocation concerns.

DRP officials emphasize that early cooperation expedites the process and allows families to move into new homes sooner. Those already in rented homes urge others to complete vacating to expedite rehabilitation. Rent agreements come with one year's rent paid through a demand draft, plus moving costs and brokerage. After 12 months, rent increases by 5% and is directly deposited into the Head of Household's bank account until the family moves into their new home.
