Europe’s Gas Future Must Be Defended from Sea Drones

Europe's energy future is now a matter of security, as the Black Sea becomes both an energy hub and one of the world's most militarized seas. On August 20, 2026, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed a sea drone carrying explosives near the Neptun Deep gas project, demonstrating the need to protect Europe's energy infrastructure from the air.

This marks the first time Romanian aviation has used an onboard cannon against a maritime target. The incident highlights the growing militarization of the region, with Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey jointly clearing more than 150 drifting mines from shipping lanes and agreeing to expand their joint mine-countermeasures group. The Neptun Deep project, jointly developed by OMV Petrom and state-owned Romgaz, is expected to produce 8 billion cubic meters of gas annually, nearly doubling Romania's current production.

However, this critical infrastructure sits right next to a war zone, requiring constant military presence and vigilance. The stakes go beyond economic gains, as a successful attack could result in casualties and halt production. Romania's energy independence not only benefits the country but also strengthens Ukraine's resilience by curbing Russian influence in the Black Sea region.

The Black Sea is becoming a key battleground for energy security, where civilian infrastructure coexists with military systems, making it essential for Europe to defend its energy future from sea drones.
