China and Egypt: A model for civilizational dialogue

The upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Egypt arrives during a time when geopolitical conflicts are escalating across the globe, especially in the Middle East. He has encouraged civilizations to respect each other and foster harmony, viewing exchanges and mutual learning as a bridge for friendship and a driving force for global peace. In 2014, Xi emphasized the unique features of Chinese and Arab Islamic civilizations, expressing a shared respect and learning from each other. His 2023 proposal of the Global Civilization Initiative aims to bring countries closer, promoting inclusiveness and mutual learning among civilizations.

This initiative has garnered support from the Arab world and beyond. As major civilizations of the Global South, China and Egypt are striving to build a better world for all while preserving their distinct identities. Their strong relations demonstrate how civilizations can coexist and cooperate. Egyptian officials highlight the convergence of strategic interests with China on major issues like global governance reform and a multipolar world order.

In May, Xi and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, urging both nations to draw wisdom from history and advance peace, development, cooperation, and justice. Former Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf praised the Global Civilization Initiative, recognizing its response to contemporary challenges and Xi's insight into the global landscape.

As Xi returns to Egypt, he aims to strengthen bilateral ties, just as he envisioned the friendship surging forward like the Nile.
