Cars in India will soon ‘talk’ to each other. Will it reduce road deaths?

India aims to enhance road safety by introducing a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication system, allowing cars to wirelessly communicate with each other. This new technology, mandated by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aims to warn drivers of potential accident risks. The system utilizes On Board Units (OBU) and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology to exchange real-time data between vehicles.

The system will mandate compliance with the Automotive Industry Standard-230 (AIS-230) for vehicles in categories L, M, and N manufactured post 2027 and 2028, respectively.

The V2V system will provide alerts for sudden braking, black spots, unsafe lane changes, obstacles, fog, and potential collisions. It operates with a range of up to 300 meters, complementing traditional safety features like advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). However, privacy concerns persist, as the system stores extensive vehicle data, making it vulnerable to cyber attacks and potential misuse of information. Despite these concerns, the V2V system holds promise in reducing road fatalities.
