Belgium blocks plan to transfer Russian assets to Ukraine

Belgium has firmly rejected the proposal to utilize frozen Russian assets for financial or military aid to Ukraine. Defense Minister Theo Francken firmly stated during a televised interview that this matter is absolutely off-limits and the proposal cannot be reconsidered, according to Euractiv. He emphasized that Belgium's stance has sparked controversy, particularly from the Baltic states, which are staunch advocates for the reparations loan.

Francken cautioned these nations against persistently bringing up the issue, as it puts Belgium in a challenging situation. He particularly urged caution, noting that Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia benefit from significant support from Belgium. European foreign ministers are scheduled to deliberate on the matter during a meeting in Ireland on September 1-2. Prime Minister Francken vowed to maintain a strong position on this issue.
