Apple Built a Foldable iPhone Pencil That May Never Launch

Apple has internally developed prototypes of a specialized Apple Pencil for its anticipated foldable iPhone, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. However, it is doubtful that the accessory will be released with the inaugural foldable iPhone. The prototype appears to be shorter and more compact compared to the Apple Pencil models currently used with iPads.

Like its predecessors, the stylus would magnetically attach to the side of the foldable iPhone for storage and charging. This design, however, presents an issue on a foldable device. The attachment point might obstruct users when they open the phone without intending to use the stylus. Additionally, there are worries that the stylus could damage the display, as foldable screens are typically more fragile than standard smartphone screens.

Samsung encounters a similar problem and offers specialized S Pen models exclusively for its foldable smartphones.

Apple's initial foldable iPhone is projected to be unveiled on September 9. If the stylus has advanced beyond the prototype stage, it will become apparent at that time. Gurman also revealed that Apple is evaluating white and dark gray ceramic case options for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12. Furthermore, the company is testing a software feature that would enable the watch's heart-rate sensor to continuously collect data throughout the day, as opposed to primarily during physical activity or at random intervals.

Apple is reportedly redesigning its fitness and health apps to make them more comparable to the services provided by Whoop and Oura.

While the foldable iPhone stylus is unlikely to launch, Gurman indicated that a more substantial redesign of the Apple Watch is more probable to occur next year. However, the timeline for this redesign may be postponed until 2028.
