Amusan claims Grand Prix Brescia win ahead DL final

Tobi Amusan showcased her prowess ahead of the 2026 Diamond League Final by clinching the women’s 100m hurdles at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on Sunday. Despite facing a strong 1.7m/s headwind, the Nigerian hurdler crossed the finish line in a time of 12.56 seconds, edging out American competitor Alaysha Johnson, who clocked 12.62 seconds, and Jamaica's Ackera Nugent, who secured third place in 12.75 seconds.

This victory came shortly after American Olympic champion Masai Russell shattered her world record at the Zurich Diamond League, posting a remarkable 12.09 seconds, thereby subtracting three hundredths of a second from Amusan's previous record of 12.12 seconds set at the Letzigrund Stadium. Russell's record-breaking performance took place on Thursday, just days before Amusan's triumph.

Prior to Russell's accomplishment, Amusan had held the world record for four years, having clocked 12.12 seconds in the 2022 World Championships semi-finals; however, that time was disqualified due to a substantial tailwind. Amusan and Russell are set to face off again at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, from September 4-5. Amusan, a three-time Diamond League champion, is poised to reclaim the title this year.
