AI programme to equip 100,000 youths for changing job market, says HR minister

The AI for the People Programme, a new initiative targeting 100,000 youths aged 18 to 30, aims to equip Malaysian workers with the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving job market, according to Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The program recognizes the urgent need to expand access to artificial intelligence (AI) technology, ensuring that youths acquire relevant skills to remain competitive in today's technologically advanced landscape.

Ramanan emphasized that AI, automation, and digitalization are not future concerns, but are now integral to the modern job market. The initiative is part of broader efforts by Malaysia's Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) to bolster workforce skills via programs such as the MyMahir AI Roadshow, which currently offers free AI training to over 22,000 Malaysians, with a budget of nearly RM110 million through Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp).

The program aligns with Kesuma's mission to foster an inclusive labor market and improve workforce skills to capitalize on economic and technological advancements. Following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of six immediate initiatives, including fuel subsidies, school maintenance, AI, medical digitalization, e-Invoicing, and micro business financing, effective September 1, the AI for the People Programme offers free three-month subscriptions to various AI applications upon completion of the prescribed modules.

These subscriptions include IlmuChat, Gemini Enterprise, Wonderclip, and MuleRun, with the government also restoring the basic quota of Budi Madani RON95 from 200 to 300 liters per month. Additionally, over half a million eligible diesel-powered pickup truck and jeep owners will receive up to 400 liters of Budi Diesel monthly. Minister Ramanan highlighted that these initiatives demonstrate the government's commitment to ensuring economic growth benefits all segments of society, particularly workers from low- and middle-income backgrounds, gig workers, self-employed individuals, small traders, and women generating income from home.

He stressed that inclusive development necessitates that economic progress includes all citizens, and the government remains dedicated to building a more productive, skilled, and prosperous Malaysia under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the entire government apparatus.
