Agyarko campaign denies rift with Bawumia, defends his record of service to NPP

Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko's campaign has rejected allegations of conflict between him and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepares for its national chairmanship election on October 3, 2026. Agyarko, who is running for chairmanship, has no intention of interfering with Bawumia's role and instead intends to strengthen the party's organizational structures and unify its factions.

The campaign highlighted two misleading narratives surrounding the contest: one suggesting that individual candidates' achievements are personal, and another alleging a rift between Agyarko and Bawumia. Agyarko's campaign emphasized his long-standing association with the NPP since 1992, where he served as the party's North America Coordinator, wrote for a newspaper, and was later the National Campaign Manager and Policy Adviser to the presidential candidate.

The campaign also highlighted his work on the Constituency Adoption arrangement, which supports Ghanaian communities abroad. Agyarko's campaign claimed that these achievements belong to the party as a whole and not as individual accomplishments. The campaign further sought to dispel rumors that Agyarko would undermine Bawumia's role as flagbearer.

It stressed that the two positions have distinct responsibilities, with the flagbearer leading the campaign and the national chairman overseeing organizational structures. The campaign also stressed Agyarko's lack of intention to position himself for future elections and his commitment to serving the party independently. Agyarko's campaign framed the chairmanship as a role aimed at party unity, particularly in light of the NPP's presidential primary in January, where numerous delegates supported candidates other than Bawumia.

The campaign argued that a chairman capable of bringing together these factions would be necessary to reunite the party and fully mobilize its support for Bawumia ahead of the 2028 general election.
