'정교유착' 의혹을 수사해 온 합동수사본부(합수본)가 8개월간의 수사를 마무리했다. 합수본은 30일 이만희(81) 신천지예수교 증거장막성전(신천지) 총회장과 한학자(59) 세계여성평화그룹(WWPG) 회장 등 32명을 불구속 기소했다고 밝혔다. 합수본은 지난 2020년 10월 '신천지가 교세를 확장하는 과정에서 정치권과 유착해 온 의혹이 있다'는 고발장이 접수됨에 따라, 같은 해 10월 26일 합수본을 설치해 수사에 착수했다. 합수본은 그동안 2차례의 압수수색을 통해 확보한 증거자료와 150여 명에 대한 참고인 조사를 토대로 이들을 기소했다. 검찰은 이 총회장과 한 회장 등이 2015년 3월부터 2020년 10월까지 서로 봐주기식의 일감을 주고받는 등 부당거래를 한 혐의가 있다고 보고 있다. 특히 검찰은 이들이 2016년 20대 총선과 2020년 4월 21대 총선에 각각 개입한 정황도 포착했다. 이 총회장 등은 2016년 20대 총선에서 새누리당(국민의힘 전신) 비례대표 공천을 받거나, 2020년 4월 21대 총선에서는 미래통합당(국민의힘 전신) 비례대표로 출마한 A씨의 당선을 도와주는 대가로 금품을 주고받은 혐의도 받고 있다. 검찰은 또 이만희 총회장 등이 신천지 교세를 확장하는 과정에서 불법행위를 한 혐의도 포착했다. 이들은 2015년 12월 신천지 내부 문서에서 '위장 종교인'으로 분류한 1만 2,690명을 상대로 종교 활동을 방해한 혐의와 2018년 1월∼2020년 4월 신천지 자금 2억 5,000만 원을 빼돌린 혐의도 받고 있다. 합수본은 이와 별도로 신천지 측이 2020년 2월 코로나19 확산을 은폐하려고 방역 당국에 거짓 정보를 제공한 혐의에 대해서도 수사 중이다. 합수본 관계자는 "신천지 관련 사건은 현재 서울중앙지검에서 수사 중이며, 조만간 결론이 날 것"이라고 밝혔다.

The investigation concluded by charging 32 individuals, including former Shincheonji executive Shim I-hye and religious leader Hahm Hak-gyun, with various crimes. The investigation alleged that the Shincheonji Church forced its members to join the National Power (National Haha) group, influencing the 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 parliamentary and local elections.

Furthermore, the investigation claimed that Shincheonji covertly operated 70 church branches in 2016-2020, hiding income and profits, and evading taxes amounting to 75.7 billion won. The investigation also accused former Shincheonji chairman Hahm of misusing 19 billion won of company funds, and diverting 41 billion won to 41 local branches without proper approval.

In the case against Tuiran Church, the investigation highlighted the illegal transfer of funds to South Korean politicians, totaling approximately ¥1.89 billion to 132 politicians over 2019-2021. The investigation concluded that the Tuiran Church provided monetary support to certain politicians without proper authorization. The chairman and former vice chairman of Tuiran Church were also charged with misappropriating 260 billion won from the church's main account.

The investigation also found evidence of misrepresentation of travel expenses and other financial irregularities.

Additionally, the investigation uncovered allegations of financial irregularities by four individuals in the Tuiran Church, including misappropriation of funds and falsification of accounts. The investigation concluded that these individuals were directly involved in fraudulent activities.
