41% growth in domestic cargo in Thiruvananthapuram airport

The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has experienced a significant rise in domestic cargo handling, with a 41% increase during the first five months of FY 2026-27 compared to the same period last fiscal year. Currently, the airport manages an average of 350 metric tonnes of domestic cargo monthly. The diverse cargo includes items such as flowers, chilled fish, ornamental fish, medical kits, courier packages, postal mail, and rubber stems.

Rubber stems play a crucial role in transporting plantation-related products from Kerala to various northeastern states, while ornamental fish are sent to destinations like Delhi, Agra, and Jammu. Inbound cargo primarily consists of medicines, vaccines, medical equipment, mobile phones, meat products, courier packages, automobile parts, postal mail, lenses, and essential commodities.

The air cargo network facilitates the swift and dependable transportation of time-sensitive goods, particularly benefiting healthcare, agriculture, and fisheries industries. The recent launch of full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) operations at Vizhinjam International Seaport is anticipated to further bolster the region's logistics infrastructure.

The airport's proximity to Vizhinjam offers a chance to enhance air-sea cargo connections, allowing businesses to select the most efficient transportation mode based on the nature and urgency of their cargo, according to the airport authorities. With heightened domestic air cargo demand and Vizhinjam's emergence as a significant international maritime hub, Thiruvananthapuram is well-positioned to evolve into an integrated multimodal logistics center, strengthening Kerala's position in the national and global supply chain, expressed the airport authorities.
