11 injured in car bomb attack on Zacatecas police station

Eleven individuals were injured, including a policewoman, after a car bomb detonated outside a municipal police station in Ojocaliente, a city in the state of Zacatecas, on Sunday night. The Zacatecas Attorney General, Cristian Camacho, stated that investigators were examining whether the attack was a response to the arrest of an 18-year-old man, believed to be a hitman for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), on Saturday.

The federal Security Cabinet is working alongside Zacatecas authorities to investigate the incident. No arrests have been made as of early Monday afternoon. The explosion occurred during a town celebration, which honored the town's patron saint, at approximately 8 p.m. The attack, which damaged 30 properties and 13 vehicles, was the third explosive incident in Zacatecas within a four-day period.

According to Camacho, the 18-year-old suspect admitted to being a sicario (hitman) for the CJNG, and all evidence points to the Jalisco-based cartel as the perpetrator of the Ojocaliente attack. Mayor Juan Manuel Zambrano declared that schools would be closed on Monday, the first day of the 2026-27 school year, due to the attack, and municipal government offices were also closed to the public.
