The missing in Nepal-Tibet flash floods

Nearly 3,000 people remained missing as of Sunday, with 682 confirmed fatalities following flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border, a figure likely to fluctuate due to the disarray after such a catastrophic event. The Nepal disaster agency reported a rise in the total number of missing on their territory to 2,426 on Saturday.

In Tibet, the count of missing individuals has reached 554, with seven confirmed deaths, according to China's Xinhua news agency. In total, the combined missing population stands at least 2,980.

Nepal's disaster agency disclosed that 517 foreigners, including potential tourists and foreign workers, were still unaccounted for, while Chinese authorities estimated 260 foreigners missing. On Saturday, Nepal's disaster agency claimed a death toll of at least 675, raising the total to at least 682. The Nepal Tourism Board's figures from Friday indicated 149 Nepali tourists among the 622 listed missing, whereas the disaster agency reported a lower count of 127.

The exact number of Nepali residents unaccounted for remains uncertain but is estimated in the hundreds.

China's foreign ministry announced on Thursday that nearly 100 Chinese nationals were among the missing in Nepal. The Nepal Tourism Board reported eight Chinese individuals unaccounted for, although 16 had been rescued. This figure, along with the 554 still missing on China's side of the border, is detailed by Xinhua news agency on Saturday.

India's new tourism board figures from Friday showed 98 people missing, although 85 had been rescued. In the United States, ninety citizens were reported missing by the State Department, with three already rescued. None of them were reported as fatalities. The Nepal Tourism Board put the figure at 65 missing on Friday, with two rescued.

Ukraine's embassy in Nepal reported 61 Ukrainians still missing, increasing their earlier number by six.
